Letter to the Editor, “French Ideal of Bicycle-Sharing Meets Reality” (Oct. 31, 2009)

Regarding: The New York Times, October 31, 2009, “French Ideal of Bicycle-Sharing Meets Reality

Dear Editor,

As an American who has recently returned from living in France, I definitely agree that France’s Vélib program has been fraught with problems. However, this in not the case in Lyon, where my wife and I lived earlier this year. In fact, France’s second city — which was the first French city to start a bike-sharing program (“Vélo’v“), two years before Paris — has had no such problems. But it seems to me that either a combination of lack of enforcement, Parisians’ character, and/or significantly larger size of their program must have something to do with their propensity to damage the bikes. Without trying to sound haughty, in Lyon, I never observed vandalism with the Vélo’v system — and I used it frequently! — anywhere close to the scale of the described problems with Vélib. With public bike sharing starting to come to North America (Montreal, Washington, D.C., San Francisco) I hope that North American cities like are not scared off by this story of vandalism and instead look to other European cities where such a program does work well.

Sincerely,

Cyrus Farivar
Oakland, Calif.

Happy 40th Birthday, Internet!

Pumpkin Scones: Sunday morning baking

Last night, I had the sudden urge to make pumpkin scones, so Bex and I hit the new Berkeley Bowl West for supplies, before getting drinks at Marc 49. By the time we got home, I decided that they were obviously they’re better over breakfast. So I woke up this morning at about 8:30 and went to work. Within an hour, this is what came out of my oven. They were shockingly easy to make.

I used the recipe from the Cheese Board Collective cookbook, page 44.

Pretty flippin’ good, if I do say so myself. However, I just realized I forgot to put in the buttermilk and cream. Good thing I have enough materials for a second batch.

Hossein Derakhshan’s father writes Ayatollah Larijani, head of Iran’s Judiciary

Just 10 days before the one-year anniversary of the arrest of Hossein Derakhshan, his father, Hassan Derakhshan, has written a letter to Ayatollah Larijani, the head of the Department of the Judiciary. The letter was published on the website of Salaam, a reformist newspaper today, October 21, 2009 (29th of Mehr, 1388).

The letter was translated from the original Persian by an Iranian living in California who wished to remain anonymous and edited for clarity by yours truly.

To the Presence of Ayatollah Amoli Larijani, the Respected Head of the Judiciary:

Greetings and respect to you. One year has passed since the day that my son was arrested.

In all these months, days, and hours, my family, my wife and I were hoping that in the arms of Islamic law and the mercy of the Islamic judiciary, Hossein’s case will be dealt with in the way it deserves.

There is no need to mention the numerous times that we refused the requests of foreign media to explain Hossein’s situation.

Even when we heard the worst gossip about his treatment in semi-official media, we were silent and in fact, no government organization has ever denied this worrisome news, not just to calm our very worried hearts down, but at least to respect the independence of judiciary about this case.

During this entire time, our son has had just two short meetings with us for only a few minutes. Please imagine that for every six months we just saw him for very few minutes. We have no information about his legal situation.

No court has been held yet and we don’t even know which institution or security organization Hossein is under the control of. Many times, from many different ways, we tried to get some precision about his situation, but we couldn’t. Does a detainee’s dignified manner deserve such treatment?

Many times, my son admitted in his writings and conversations that he would love to serve his country. And he came back to Iran on his own to answer his accusations. Does such a person who has come back to his country and his beliefs, deserve such a welcome?

Our complaint is not because you are exercising the law, but to the contrary, because of its suspension, lack of information and disrespecting of the law. The accused have rights, the family of the accused has some rights, and we know that the ruler of society has some rights as well, and that rules and regulations are valuable.

We are certain that you’d agree that one year of a brutal arrest of a person who has come voluntarily and on his own to the bosom of Iran and dear Islam, is not an appropriate welcome.

I, my wife and our family are still looking forward to your just treatment.

With respect,

Hassan Derakhshan

California Farmers’ Market iPhone app!

Thanks to Yola, I’ve just discovered the exact iPhone application that I’ve been looking for! Enter: California Farmers’ Market Finder.

It does everything that I want to in a farmers’ market app: sorts by day, locates the markets nearest me, plots them on a map — and it does it for the entire state! Thanks PasoTours!

In fact, based on these guys’ blog, it appears that we had the same idea around the same time.

October 29, 2009 marks the 40th anniversary of the creation of the ARPANET, the precursor to the Internet. On that day, a small unknown laboratory at UCLA unleashed a force that has since spread to every corner of the globe, revolutionizing communications forever. Just two days before the actual anniversary, we will be looking back at the early days of the ARPANET and will explore what its future holds over the next 40 years.

For this first edition October 27 at 7:00 pm, we have the privilege of featuring Katie Hafner and Brewster Kahle and the show will be broadcast live on SF Appeal and VidSF.

“Tech Atlas SF” is a monthly one hour LIVE WEB TV SHOW. Passionate people come and discuss how globally-relevant technology is impacting our lives.

LA Times: Dodgers capitalize on ninth-inning error to rally for Game 2 victory over Cardinals

Holliday’s ninth-inning error today at Dodger Stadium paved the way for a stunning two-run rally that gave the Dodgers a 3-2 victory over St. Louis and a commanding two-games-to-none lead in the best-of-five National League division series.

With two out, the bases empty and the Cardinals clinging to a one-run lead, closer Ryan Franklin got James Loney to hit a sinking liner into left field, almost directly toward Holliday, who couldn’t make the catch when the ball struck him in the groin as he rushed forward and made a last-second adjustment with his glove.

Loney reached second base and Dodgers Manager Joe Torre inserted Juan Pierre as a pinch-runner. Casey Blake walked on a full count, bringing up Ronnie Belliard.

Belliard hit Franklin’s first pitch up the middle for a run-scoring single to tie the score. Franklin walked Russell Martin on four pitches to load the bases before pinch-hitter Mark Loretta hit Franklin’s second offering to shallow left-center field to drive in Blake with the winning run and prompt the Dodgers to pour out of their dugout in celebration.

The Dodgers can sweep the series by winning Game 3 on Saturday at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
