Farewell, New York
Contrary to popular belief, I actually do like New York. But, as I’ve said many times, I’m not in love with it. Here, my mind has been on California pretty much the whole time since I’ve been here. A California Republic flag hung over my bed, a large state map hung on the opposite wall, and a photo of the San Francisco skyline adorns my laptop background. Since the time that I left, I’ve always said that unless I had…

Spring is upon us!
The weather is a balmy 72 degrees today. I’m wearing shorts and a polo shirt today! Huzzah! (I’m supposed to play catch with Sam tomorrow on the grass, which will be awesome.) I took these three snapshots while walking to class about 20 minutes ago.

A slice of life from my j-school beat: Crown Heights
At 105, the Rabbi Doesn’t Sleep Late: A century of poring over ancient Jewish texts has carved deep circles under Rabbi Yehuda Chitrik’s eyes. Decades of Sabbath- table storytelling have left him speaking softly and seldom. At 105 years old, he seems almost mortal. “He is not so good,” his daughter Shaindel Schneerson, 72, said the other night. “Right now, he’s saying his morning prayers” – she reported after dinner. “In the evening, he is doing this.” But even at…

High in Quality
Despite the fact that Toland Grinnell told me that Terminal 5 was reopening, I went out to JFK today and discovered that it was closed. 4 hours wasted. Sucks. While out in Ozone Park, I bought a roti at a Trinidadian place and a Solo soda. (I love the image imprinted on the bottle — the side text reads: “High in Quality”) And in what could be some very good news Prof. Freedman is interested in my book idea, which…

Since when did hot air balloons get radios?
Some dudes got arrested today for landing their hot air balloon in Central Park. The men said they were in distress and had been cleared to land by air traffic controllers Ð a claim police disputed. Do air traffic controllers interact with hot air balloons? Is this normal?

“Summertime, hot dogs, baseball in Brooklyn — life doesn’t get any better than this.”
Why didn’t anyone tell me that John Flansburgh had another band (Rich? Boyk? Frysinger?) ? They’ve got some neat stuff. I was perusing the TMBG site today and downloaded the TMBG Clock Radio — basically a downloadable program that acts as Internet radio station that only plays TMBG. On it, I discovered a song called “Hillbilly Drummer Girl,” which was really poppy and fun (turns out it’s a cover of a song written by the Young Fresh Fellows, but still).…
