Don’t assume — it just makes an ass out of u and me.

So today I’m in Econ section and the GSI was explaining “utility” and said something that always makes me cringe and reinforces my hatred of economics as an academic discipline — it makes non-sensical statements like:

“We assume that your happiness can be measured by some equations.”

ARGH! I can’t even articulate how annoying this type of reasoning makes me.

In other news, I ran into my brother at a talk today being given by Azar Nafisi, author of Reading Lolita in Tehran — just when I was impressed that he was taking some interest in worldly things, he informed me that he was there to get English extra credit (his prof I guess was organizing it), but he then qualified that with: “Well, I would have gone anyway.” Sure.

I’ve gotten more books for my thesis and have to carry them around the rest of the day, and now that it’s stopped raining I’m wearing shoes and an extra jacket. I hate unecessary excess — wait a sec, is there such a thing as necessary excess?

I’m also annoyed when my emails don’t go out because the SMTP server doesn’t feel like working — and then I reboot my mail client and it works magically.

And because I invited Paul Boutin as my Orkut — we’re going to have coffee in Berkeley next week. Cool.

I am now immortalized on the OCF site.
