Iran announced that it resumed work at a key nuclear facility today, effectively ending a suspension of its nuclear program and severing more than two years of negotiations with Europe that held out the promise of closer ties with the West.

The Bush administration, along with allies Britain, France and Germany, had warned they would try to take the issue of Iran’s program to the U.N. Security Council if Tehran made good, as it did today, on promises to restart a uranium conversion facility in the town of Isfahan.

Supreme Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei received visiting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad here Monday.

At the meeting, Ayatollah Khamenei said that the visit to Iran of President Assad can consolidate bilateral ties more than before.

Pointing to the current stable relations between Iran and Syria, the Supreme Leader laid emphasis on bolstering all-out ties between the two states.

The Syrian president for his part said that Iran’s recent presidential elections indicated unity and national solidarity in the country.

He added that the election was the message of the Iranian nation to the West particularly the United States.
