Sold ‘Em Way Up High At 1200
This is my first attempt at any musical composition. It melds the incredible auctioneering skills of Dan Skeels, the 2004 World Livestock Auctioneering Champion with the most awesome sounds of my buddy Nick Freilich, aka Epicte the Elemental. Dan Skeels vs. Epicte the Elemental – Sold ‘Em Way Up High At 1200 (2:21 – 160 kbps – 2.8 MB) And yes, that is a real picture of Mr. Skeels.

New Pornos 4 Eva!
Pitchfork’s Interview with The New Pornographers: Pitchfork: Will Dan be playing any instruments, or only singing with you? Newman: I think he’s just going to be singing because he’s going to be doing his Destroyer set, and I think he’d rather just come up and do his thing with a pint glass in one hand. I didn’t want to burden him with too much. I also thought that it was conceivable that by the time our set hits, he might…

iTunes Signature Maker
I found this on diggdot.us today, the iTunes Signature Maker, a web program that analyzes your music in your iTunes library and spits out a 15 second “audio signature”, a sort of weird but cool artificial mix of your music. Mine is here. Included in it (in order) are excerpts from these works: The New Pornographers – Miss Teen Wordpower Gustav Mahler – Symphony No. I, Mvt. 1 The New Pornographers – Jackie, Dressed in Cobras Matchbox 20 – 3…

Goddamn, Slate is Awesome
Slate: On a certain level, it’s hard to blame Anglophone critics. Your junior-high être et avoir won’t get you very far with the torrents of slang that fill French rap. Even most French-speakers find it hard to follow along. Many MCs deliver whole songs in Verlan, the ingenious, dizzying slang in which words are reversed or recombined, turning arabe (arab) into rabza, bourré (drunk) into rébou, bête (stupid) into teubé, and so on. (Verlan is itself an example of the…

Three Friday News Bits
1) From the WTF!?!? Department: NYT: WASHINGTON, Nov. 10 – The Senate voted Thursday to strip captured “enemy combatants” at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, of the principal legal tool given to them last year by the Supreme Court when it allowed them to challenge their detentions in United States courts. 2) From the Good Explainer Department: NYT: PARIS, Nov. 10 – Semou Diouf, holding a pipe in one hand and a cigarette in the other, stood amid the noisy games of…

TMBG was loads of fun last night
Becky and I saw TMBG last night at Bimbo’s. What a great show. Just wholesome, clean, nerd rock. Corn Mo opened for them, he’s this sort of cross between Wesley Willis and Mitch Hedburg but less crazy and with an accordion. He’s awesome. In roughly the order they played them in: Dead Istanbul (not Constantinople) New York City Experimental Film Alphabet of Nations Damn Good Times Stalk of Wheat Clap Your Hands Memo to Human Resources Drink! Older Fingertips Particle…
