{"id":1445,"date":"2007-10-18T19:11:30","date_gmt":"2007-10-19T02:11:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cyrusfarivar.com\/blog\/?p=1445"},"modified":"2007-10-18T19:11:30","modified_gmt":"2007-10-19T02:11:30","slug":"the-big-one-is-coming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cyrusfarivar.com\/blog\/2007\/10\/18\/the-big-one-is-coming\/","title":{"rendered":"The Big One is coming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyrusfarivar.com\/images\/hayward-1868.jpg\"\/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Hoo boy, maybe it&#8217;s time to get our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?file=\/earthquakes\/archive\/ready.dtl\">earthquake kit<\/a> in order.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/ci_7211083?nclick_check=1\">SJ Mercury News<\/a>: <i><\/p>\n<blockquote><p> Studying layers of soil in a trench they dug near the Fremont BART station, geologists recently made a startling discovery: The Hayward Fault has had a big earthquake roughly every 140 years, on average, since 1315.<\/p>\n<p>And this Sunday marks year 139.<\/p>\n<p>Calling the fault a &#8220;tectonic time bomb,&#8221; scientists Wednesday urged Bay Area residents to put together an earthquake plan, stockpile supplies and consider having their older, two-story homes checked for structural weaknesses.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers, gathered near the fault Wednesday, believe that it could produce quakes as large as a magnitude 7.0, even 7.3.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It wouldn&#8217;t be a surprise to any seismologist if it had a big earthquake tomorrow,&#8221; said Tom Brocher, coordinator of Northern California earthquake hazards investigations for the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park. &#8220;This is a real threat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The announcement comes just days before the 139th anniversary of the 1868 Hayward earthquake. Known as the &#8220;Great San Francisco Earthquake&#8221; until the devastating 1906 temblor came along, the quake remains the nation&#8217;s 12th most deadly earthquake despite the East Bay&#8217;s sparse population at the time.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hoo boy, maybe it&#8217;s time to get our earthquake kit in order.
