We met up on Tuesday morning, and while my Dad had a meeting, Mom and I walked from the Village down to Ground Zero. Then we all met up at Penn Station and got on the 2 pm train to Hartford, which despite being delayed by about 40 minutes, was quite enjoyable.

If it didn’t cost over twice of what it costs on the Chinatown bus ($31.75 round-trip), I’d take the train a lot more. It’s very comfortable, spacious, and there are even power outlets for my laptop. A fine way to travel indeed. I think that was the longest train trip I’ve ever taken in the US. A few years ago I took the train from Baltimore to DC and from Berkeley to Davis, and when I was a kid, from LA to San Diego. So that’s kinda neat. Something about being in a train station I find is a lot less stressful than being in an airport.

So we got to Hartford last night, and Heidi picked us up and brought us back to the house. She was having a big party for some student, trustees, faculty and so forth from the Seminary so we got loads of Turkish food catered from a place in West Haven. Excellent.

Today I went to the office of Sen. Christopher Dodd (D-CT) to drop off a printed copy of this petition that Sam and I gathered together since Monday. We got about half the student body on board. Going there was not nearly as exciting as it sounds. Dodd wasn’t around and so I had to drop it with some lackey.

Thanksgiving should be fun. Alex (my brother) and Nena (my other cousin, Martin’s sister) arrive tonight from Oakland and Montreal, respectively. Sarmad comes on Thursday morning. And we’ll have other guests from California and Massachusetts and a few other random people.

And during the quiet times, I get to work on some freelance stuff. A working vacation, family, friends, free food, a warm house. I love it.

Happy T-Day, everyone.

Update: I forgot to mention this neat article from today’s NYT about “Julie,” the voice and person behind the phone network for Amtrak.
