Worth), en route to LGA (LaGuardia) and one of the flight attendants (female) was talking with these two women sitting across the aisle from me, and they were all fawning over this mid 20-something guy who was in the Army, and was headed back to Afghanistan after 15 days of R&R. They seemed to treat him like he was some sort of celebrity or something — I mean, sure, give soldiers respect and courtesy and all that, they have a real rough gig — but they kept saying stuff to each other like: “Should I go talk to him? Would that be ok?” and so forth.

Then, once the flight attendant left to go resume her duties, one of the women started said to the other:

“You know, there are people who I work with who are from Afghanistan and from Iraq and they all are grateful to what the United States has done for them. And I’ve also heard from some people in Iran who say: ‘When are you coming for us?'”

And she looked at the other woman with “freedom-is-on-the-march” in her eyes, and the other woman just nodded in agreement.

I bit my tounge out of not wanting to stir up a scene, but I really really wanted to say something. That’s just so wrong, and so not going to happen for many reasons. I bet that there are some people who want the US to invade, and most Iranians would say that they want the mullahs gone, but certainly not at the hands of the Americans — not to mention the fact that we don’t have the troops for it.

On that note, there was a really good Perspective on KQED the other day about how Americans don’t travel. It was done by a Stanfurd undergrad. She said that 2/3 of the American public don’t have passports, which I believe, but I wonder where she got that. Last time I tried to call the State Dept. to figure out what the number was, they wouldn’t give it out for “security reasons.”

So I was on the plane from OAK to DFW (Dallas/Ft.
