Anyhow.

Things have been very busy lately both at Macworld and for some freelance assignments, so this post will be somewhat abbreviated.

Firstly, go donate some cash to the International Committee of the Red Cross to help relief efforts in Pakistan/India. 20,000 dead. That’s bad news, man. I just dropped in $25.

Friday: Worked from the Oakland bureau as I had to take my car in for an estimate when a Berkeley police van hit my brother driving it taking out the rear left tail light and damaging the bumper. Estimated repairs: $2500. They admitted in the police report that it was completely their fault.

Becky and I saw Murderball at Wheeler, on the UC Berkeley campus. Mark Zupan is the man. Period. I also want to see Good Night and Good Luck and Capote.

Saturday: Was interviewed for my Columbia professor Sam Freedman‘s son, Aaron Freedman’s new podcast, Teen Tech Buzz. Brunch with my parents and brother at Crepevine on College. Returned the Linksys Access Point which wouldn’t play nice with the Netgear router that I’ve set up in my grandparents’ house. I needed something to act as a bridge, to receive the WiFi signal, so I get a Netgear Access Point. Driving up to the house in the Berkeley hills, my car gets hit at an angle from one of their neighbors, taking out the left side mirror completely and making a huge dent in the wheel well and driver’s side door. The car is still driveable, however. I set up the AP, and when I can’t figure it out, Netgear tech support (in India) tells me that while that AP does have bridging capabilities it can only talk to another Netgear bridge or another Netgear AP. The router doesn’t have bridging capabilities for some stupid reason. That means I either have to get another Access Point and use those devices as a bridge, which is pointless. So now I’m bidding on this Netgear bridge, which no retailer seems to sell anymore. *sighs* That means another trip to Best Buy in Emeryville to return the Netgear AP.

After the situation with the WiFi and the car, Becky, Monica, Lane and I headed over to Mitama on College Ave. for some sushi. Lane, our resident Nipponophile, pronounced the place as being good and authentic, and the sushi chefs continued to bow to him as he thanked them in Japanese as we departed. Then we drove over to The Mint Karaoke Lounge to celebrate Monica’s birthday. I took to the stage once with Lane, where we sang my favorite song from 5th grade, MC Hammer’s classic, “U Can’t Touch This.” Dancing ensued. Lane and Monica’s rendition of Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way,” which brought down the house.

We left the club at 1:30 am and discovered the entrance to the Bay Bridge on 2nd/Bryant was closed, and we drove around The City for nearly an hour, passing El Farolito at 2:50 am, attempting to get on the Bay Bridge via Cesar Chavez. We discovered a bit past 3 am as we approached the Bridge from the freeway to “expect major delays from 1 am to 5 am” and to “take alternate routes.” Frustration ensued. 101 south to San Mateo and over that bridge. I was home at 4 am.

Sunday: Woke at the crack of noon. Climbing with Bhu was fun indeed. Becky and I watched half of the second season of “Da Ali G Show” courtesy of Reel.

Today: Found out the other driver admitted 100 percent fault for the Saturday incident. By my estimate the car easily did at least $3000 worth of damage. That plus the $2500 from before far exceeds the Blue Book value of the car, which in “good” condition is worth about $1500. So that probably means that a new (read: used) car is in my future. So that’s sorta cool.

I head out for Istanbul on Saturday morning. Oakland –> Washington, D.C. –> Paris –> Rome –> Istanbul is the plan with about an hour at each airport. On my way home I have a night in Paris. I hope to podcast from The City Formerly Known As Byzantium at least once.

Special Apple Event on Wednesday.
