When I was growing up in Santa Monica, our nearest TJ’s was the on National Blvd. in West LA. By my high school days, one had opened up in our fair city. Without exaggeration, 80% of the foodstuffs (and other random items, including laundry detergent and shampoo) came from TJ’s — the only things that we didn’t get there were things that couldn’t be had there. Back in the day, this included any fresh produce and things like baking flour and other such items. We had our family favorites, which included the chocolate chips (kept in our freezer), frozen taquitos, Chocolate Cat Cookies (For People!), and Hansen’s soda. Today, as a bigger kid, I continue to buy all these items, but occasionally add on a few extras, like the $8 Penfolds Australian wine that I love, Oregon Honey beer, fresh orange juice, and peppered sandwich deli-sliced turkey. I still use the TJ’s shampoo, hand soap, and even kitty litter. I’m a sucker for their salsa fresca and fresh mozzarella. Oh, and that new blood orange Italian soda? Truly brilliant.

So, congratulations, New Yorkers, on finally receiving what us Californians have been blessed to have had for years. When I lived amongst you last year, I made do with Fairway and FreshDirect. But now, I’m much happier with the eternal combination of Farmer’s Markets, Berkeley Bowl, the occasional run to Costco, and of course, my beloved TJ’s.

I’m a Trader Joe’s kid.
