Watch Who You Shake Hands With
BBC, 4/10/05: Prince Charles has made a diplomatic gaffe on the eve of his wedding, by shaking hands with Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe at the Pope’s funeral. The prince was “caught by surprise” when Mr Mugabe leaned over to greet him, Clarence House said. Mr Mugabe sidestepped a European Union travel ban to attend the funeral service in the Vatican. Some politicians condemned Prince Charles’ greeting as “stupid” and “not very sensible”. BBC, 4/10/05: Iranian President Mohammad Khatami has denied…

“Lonely and Dreaming of the West Coast”
Ok kids, so six weeks from tomorrow I’m heading back west. And just like my Holiday NYC CD, I’d like to put together another one for my journalism buddies, this one with California flavor. So, I’m soliciting California-themed tunes. Here’s what I’ve come up with so far, in this (tentative) order: Bad Religion – Los Angeles is Burning Tony Bennett – I Left My Heart in San Francisco Mamas and the Papas – California Dreamin’ The Decemberists – Los Angeles,…

Spring is upon us!
The weather is a balmy 72 degrees today. I’m wearing shorts and a polo shirt today! Huzzah! (I’m supposed to play catch with Sam tomorrow on the grass, which will be awesome.) I took these three snapshots while walking to class about 20 minutes ago.

I haven’t been to a grocery store in months, either.
FreshDirect is really great. In fact, the stuff that I mailed home earlier today was in a FreshDirect box. But on the other hand, I really do miss TJs and Berkeley Bowl. Can you tell that I want to come home again? NYT, 4/6/05: Two months ago Ms. Whetstone joined the company of New Yorkers who have opted out of supermarket shopping. Whether they hate shopping with kids in tow, dislike maneuvering a cart through narrow aisles or just prefer…

What good does blurring the US Capitol do?
Someone thinks they can hide the location of the US Capitol! If you go to maps.google.com and type in 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Washington DC, and click “Satellite” in the top right corner, follow The Mall eastward to the Capitol, the Capitol building appears blurry when everything else around it appears clear. [Mirror] Also the White House looks flatter than the other buildings around it that have a shadow. Any ideas why someone would want to try to hide the location…

The Moving Has Begun
This morning I went down to the post office and sent my first bundle of things back to California — a box of books. (I was wondering though, I sent them Media Mail, but do they just take my word for it? What’s to stop people from sending things via Media Mail that don’t fit the criteria?) I may send another box later this week — winter clothes. Six weeks from Friday, I will be on a plane back to…

Looks like the “Mine-is-Bigger” Syndrome isn’t limited to the US
So now the Emiratis are getting into the game: An artist drawing of the Burj Dubai — developers aren’t saying how high the skyscraper will top out, but observers say it will be above 2,300 feet (700 meters). AP, 4/4/05 In case you’d forgotten, our own Freedom Tower was supposed to be the tallest. But it hasn’t been built yet. NEW YORK (CNN) — The Freedom Tower to be built at the site of the devastated World Trade Center in…
