Weekend Food in SF Roundup
Yesterday, before going to a show at Café du Nord, Becky, Leila and I had pizza from Zante’s, which is basically Indian food but on a naan-style dough, in pizza form. Amazing. As Becky said: “I like pizza and I like Indian food. But together . . . oh, man!” While at Ton Kiang down on Geary in San Francisco today with Garett, Rachel, Eric and Ari, while we were having dim sum we saw Robin Williams for a second…

Lamb Festival
Because the the chowhounds seem to be down on the Gilroy Garlic Festival next weekend, someone also mentioned the Lamb Festival in Dixon, CA (towards Sacramento) on Saturday instead. It’s smaller, cheaper ($1/person), and closer (at least from Berkeley). Who’s interested?

An Apt Comment
Yesterday, I was driving Boyk and I home from Fruitvale. We had just eaten 10 tacos between four taquerias and polished it all off with a few churros. We got stuck in some brief traffic on the 80. Cyrus: “You know what sucks? Traffic.” Boyk: “Yeah, it’s definately not as good as churros.”

New Chowhound Book!
Jim Leff (the Alpha Hound of Chowhound) — has just compiled a new book of great chow in the Bay Area! There will be a signing at Cody’s Telegraph on May 23 (Monday) at 7:30 pm! Come one! Come all! Apparently Boyk and I are in it, on page 293, but I haven’t seen it yet. 🙂

La Coupe du Monde de la Boulangerie
In case there was any doubt, this proves the greatness of San Francisco (via Instapundit). KTVU: PARIS — The United States’ bread-baking skills were crowned superior to those of France and the rest of the world the Coupe du Monde de la Boulangerie, the World Cup of Baking, held in Paris, France. The 2005 U.S. Bread Bakers Guild team was coached by Didier Rosada and included Jeffrey Yankellow, both of the San Francisco Baking Institute. They beat 11 other countries’…

I haven’t been to a grocery store in months, either.
FreshDirect is really great. In fact, the stuff that I mailed home earlier today was in a FreshDirect box. But on the other hand, I really do miss TJs and Berkeley Bowl. Can you tell that I want to come home again? NYT, 4/6/05: Two months ago Ms. Whetstone joined the company of New Yorkers who have opted out of supermarket shopping. Whether they hate shopping with kids in tow, dislike maneuvering a cart through narrow aisles or just prefer…

After-dinner thoughts
If roquefort (a kind of bleu cheese) were a character in the Mortal Kombat of flavors, it would commit a fatality every time.

T-minus 11 hrs 30 min
Turducken went into the oven at 6:30 am Pacific. My parents’ oven timer doesn’t go beyond 9 hours 50 min. Slightly less daunting this time, but was made more daunting by the fact that the butchery had cut through the skin already, requiring the use of sewing needles, which were not needed last year. Crisis (and 6 am trip to Albertson’s) was averted by finding them in a kitchen drawer. Thanks again to Sarmad for being such a good sport…

Oh yes, my life in New York would be complete, if . . .
There is a rumor floating around my neighborhood Yahoo Group that Trader Joe’s has leased space at Broadway and 103rd Street (taking the street-level space in the new Columbia dorm being built there). Does anyone know anything about this? – http://chowhound.com/boards/manhat/messages/159735.html
