A Part of Americana

Boing Boing posted this list of the World Livestock Auctioneer Championships. This is pretty amazing. I’m thinking that they’d sound good also mixed with an electronic/techno track. I’ll try one later today. When I showed my co-worker, Curt Poff, our resident Midwesterner — he hails from outside St. Joseph, MO — he told me that his father is a professional auctioneer. That’s pretty sweet.

This is a part of America that I know nothing about. On the American (Hadsell) side of my family, we were farmers about four generations back, outside Fresno.

I’d love to see one of these auctions in person.

Update: Curt sent his father the site, and he replied:

took a look at the site and i know the 1975 Champion (Ron Ball) he used to work at the Grant City barn in the late 60’s. I heard him many times when I worked for Purina and worked out of Sheridan Feeder Supply. He moved to Colorado and went to work there.
