Arthur Miller – R.I.P. 1915-2005
LA Times: “I like the company of women,” he told the New York Times in 2004. “Life is very boring without them.”

Happy Gettysburg Day!
Today is the 141st anniversary of the Gettysburg Address. So to celebrate, I’m putting up a bootleg recording that I made of an 11’30” reading by Sarah Vowell of her experience at Gettysburg. Please forgive the loud laughter by myself and my friends. And on a totally unrelated note, (courtesy Rachel Balsham), is this Bush in drag? (from this article.) You be the judge.

To my female/drug-dealer friends:
Courtesy Engadget, comes this story: The text message came from Christopher’s girlfriend, a college student, and was sent while she was driving in her car to pick up Christopher after school let out. It read: ”I need a tampon!” School officials say it is common knowledge that tampon is slang for a large marijuana cigarette. But Toby and Leigh Klump say that even if Grube and Kocher had the right to search their son’s cell phone, and they don’t believe…

Why can’t everyone be like bonobos?
New York Times, May 3 2004: Genetically, humans and bonobos, a species of chimpanzee, are more than 98 percent similar. Socially, it is another matter. Matriarchal as a rule, bonobos eschew conflict. They do not fight over territory. They do not kill. Any small friction they resolve through sexual contact: a playful rub, oral sex, full intercourse. . . . On a Sunday afternoon not long ago, the park’s 31 young charges did what young bonobos do: chewed on blades…

“We’ll find that out soon.”
Busy. I graduate in a month. My thesis is due in two weeks. Scary. I ditched a bunch of classes this week. I just paid my taxes and SBC bill online. I love paying for things online. It’s so much funner. Was very unimpressed with the Bush speech last night. WashPost had a good piece on it. Best exchange EVER: QUESTION: Mr. President, why are you and the vice president insisting on appearing together before the 9-11 commission? And, Mr.…

Busy little Monday
Well I hope everyone had a good Passover week / Easter holiday / whatever else you did recently. For some reason yesterday I had a cleaning bug and in one afternoon, managed to clean my bathroom, my bedroom, and the windows of my car (which desperately needed a shot or two of Windex) — for the first time in many many months. I don’t know what overcame me, but I did it. I also tried to do laundry, and managed…

Ted Koppel of ABC is the 2004 Commencement Speaker
Argh. I’m way too busy. I’m stressed out with my trip to the East Coast tomorrow, my Econ homework, my Farsi homework, the stories that I’m working on for various publications, my thesis, worrying about getting a job vs. going to grad school (I got rejections from SIPA [Columbia] and SAIS [Hopkins] today). I’m graduating in two months. Scary. Congrats to Boing Boing for all their success winning at the Bloggies. I’ve been reading for about 9 months or so…

2 large margueritas later . . .
I’m still more or less coherent. My head’s slightly spinny, but I can function. I think I have a pretty high tolerance for alcohol. I got to meet John Markoff today, the illustrious New York Times reporter, which was pretty rad. He was a guest speaker in my J298 Tech Journalism class. Hopefully, between him, Paul Boutin, Joe Menn and Katie Hafner, that I can really get in with the hip tech journalism crowd. On the grad school front, I…

Saturday
After work, I went and picked up Giselle at SFO. It’s her first time in California! She seemed pretty astounded to see “hills” — I guess they don’t have those in Canada/Philly. I had parked my car at Millbrae BART for the day and CalTrained into the city. However, I discovered that I’d inadvertandly left my lights on when I returned to my car, a half hour before I was supposed to pick up Giselle. I called AAA, but they…
